‘Game of Thrones’ locations
Since Northern Ireland is a gem that is yet to be discovered by tourists and couples who dream of getting married in Europe, the region enjoys serenity most days of the year. Northern Ireland has only gained attention since it was featured several times by the popular series Game of Thrones. But even so, the influx of tourists here in Northern Ireland is still at around 3.7 million each year compared to Spain’s over 300 million or Italy’s 210 million. So if you just want some peace and quiet in a nature-packed European wedding destination, you’d love to get married in Northern Ireland.
When to have a destination wedding in United Kingdom
Spring
Getting married in the UK during spring is ideal if you don’t want to mix in with the crowds, and still want to have a little sunshine on your big day and honeymoon. Spring weather in the UK is generally dry, so you will not worry too much about rain on your big day. However, take note that the temperature drops to an actual cold at night, so you need to bring thick clothes with you for your honeymoon. March is generally cloudy, but the sun starts to shine in April. May is the best month in spring to tie the knot in the UK when gardens are starting to bloom and national parks are open for your honeymoon trip.
Summer
There is a reason why the British Monarchs are celebrating their birthdays in summer. June is the best month for outdoor celebrations in the woodlands, castle parks, and manor house gardens. If the two of you want to explore some sports activities, summer is the perfect time. It’s the time of the year when rains don’t bother that much and sunsets are at their best. July is the warmest month in the UK, ideal for beach weddings.
Autumn
]If your goal is a dreamy ceremony under the enchanting autumn trees, either September to early October is the best month to do it. You’ll love the autumn colors of the falling leaves as you walk along the streets of the British towns. Just imagine the picturesque scene in your wedding photos! However, take note that an indoor wedding is a must when your UK wedding falls in November. Beautiful castles and manor houses in the rural UK regions as well as London hotels have luxury event rooms to still make your November wedding exceedingly beautiful.
Winter
Some couples choose a winter wedding in the UK despite the very cold weather because it’s the time of the year when venues and suppliers offer the lowest prices. Enjoy a winter wonderland wedding from December to February inside a UK castle or go wild under the rain or snow in the middle of a woodland in Scotland or on top of a cliff in Northern Ireland! Your pick!
Types of wedding venues in United Kingdom
Exquisite to intimate London wedding venues
London is almost synonymous to luxury. From stately homes to royal castles, there's a perfect place for your dream luxury wedding. While most people think that London venues are fitting only for big weddings, majority of the locations here accommodate a small crowd for your special day. We're talking about a wide selection of venues ranging from iconic landmarks, rooftop bars, skyrocketing hotels, and manor houses!
Countryside castles and manor houses
Nothing compares to the castles in Gloucestershire, Surrey, and the rest of the London countryside as the best locations for laidback intimate weddings. You can have these venues all to yourself for your once in a lifetime European destination wedding. If you prefer something less grand and more homey, we recommend getting married in UK manor houses and stately homes amidst the hundreds of acres of parkland.
Scottish adventure and fairytale venues
If London is synonymous to luxury, Scotland is equivalent to adventure! Scottish elopement venues are enchanting, to say the least, with scenic mountain views, fresh breeze from the rolling hills, and thick woodlands waiting for the most adventurous couple to explore and say their I dos. If you want something more extraordinary, tie the knot in front of a waterfall or in a mountain overlooking the Hogwarts Express!
Seaside English wedding venues
There's a lot to expect from UK's 32,000 km coastline and over 1,500 beaches! Imagine a sunset ceremony atop a cliff in a gazebo with the sea in the background, or a summer outdoor wedding in a panoramic art gallery overlooking coastal views of the North Sea! It's not hard to find a secluded beach house in the UK coast where you can have an elopement with breathtaking ocean views!
Northern Ireland & Game of Thrones
Remember the Dark Hedges and the Ballintoy Harbour – or “Port of Pyke on the Iron Islands” in your favourite series, the Game of Thrones? These two locations and over 20 others are located in Northern Ireland… and you can have a micro wedding right at these spots! So if you’re a big GoT fan dreaming of a Game of Thrones kind of ambience for your wedding in Europe, any of these locations will serve you best. Have your photos taken in the middle of the peculiar line up of beech trees along the Bregagh Road in County Antrim. The place is unquestionably fantastic, the reason why it was included as a filming location in the second season of GoT.
Wedding ceremonies in United Kingdom
If you chose to get married in a location that geographically belongs to the UK, including Northern Ireland and Scotland, be sure you follow the legal requirements listed below.
Civil
Tie the knot and make it legal in the UK by following certain requirements at least a month before the ceremony. All you have to do is to meet the Registrar in person to present your original documents and to make a declaration of your intent to marry. After the processing of your documents, they can be collected at least a day before your wedding as long as the Registrar's office is open and available for an appointment. A civil marriage in the UK is legally-binding so long as it is conducted by the registrar or by the deputy registrar of the district where the wedding will take place. The venue could be in the Registrar’s Office or at any venue which was approved prior to your wedding day. To marry in a venue of your choice, you need to apply for a temporary approval for a civil ceremony in that location. There’s no strict requirement on the date of the civil ceremony and it can take place any day of the week.
Religious
In the worst case that your desired venue for the ceremony isn’t licensed to hold weddings or the temporary approval for a ceremony in that location was denied, you can choose a religious ceremony in place of the civil wedding. The only requirement is for it to be performed by a Minister of any recognized religious organisation. The good news is that religious weddings are recognized as legal in the UK, and it can be held anywhere, whether in an outdoor or indoor venue. But you have to get the permission of the Minister to hold the ceremony in your chosen location.
Symbolic
Some couples don’t mind the legalities when flying to the UK for a destination wedding. If you’re one of them, a hassle-free symbolic wedding is the perfect type of ceremony for you. A symbolic wedding means zero paperwork and what you can do is to handle all the legal requirements in your home country to make your marriage legally-binding.
Legal Marriage Requirements in the UK
Regular documentation requirements such as proof of identity, nationality, residency, and capacity to marry apply to Northern Ireland and Scotland weddings, but in there is a residency requirement in the UK. A legal requirement that is common to the rest of UK is that the couple must be at least 16 years of age. Despite the absence of residency requirement in Scotland and Northern Ireland, they need to submit completed marriage notice forms and all the required documents to the Registrar of Marriages in the district where the ceremony will take place at least a month before getting married. After getting the approval from the Registrar, the marriage should take place within a year. Same-sex marriages have been legally recognized in the UK. In England and Wales, civil marriages may not take place in religious venues, but since 1994, they may take place in other licensed venues. Religious marriages must take place in the church, except with a Special License.
Popular United Kingdom food and drinks
The full English breakfast
Widely known as originating from England, this heavy breakfast is a mix of carbs, proteins, fats, but the original full English breakfast includes some exotic additions - kidneys, fried bread, a sausage made entirely of blood (known as the black pudding). More than that, this heavy meal includes potatoes and vegetables, which the English call “bubble and squeak.”
Welsh rarebit
This UK cuisine is as simple as a bread dish can be. Slices of toast is showered generously with delicious melted cheese for a rich flavor that will satisfy your savory cravings. This simple dish can be upgraded with different sauces according to your taste. Mustard, Worcestershire, or different spices will be a great addition to the Welsh rarebit.
Clotted cream
It's uncertain where clotted cream originated, but many believe that it's from the diary farms in Devon and Cornwall. This sumptuous and tasty cream is made of full-cream cow's milk thickened to perfection through a steaming process that leaves clots on the milk. Clotted cream is so popular that an afternoon tea was named after it. Ask the British and they will tell you that a "cream tea" cannot be complete without a clotted cream!
English tea
Ever wondered why the English tea is the most popular type of tea in the whole world? That's because no other nation loves the drink more than the Brits! For the record, approximately one million cups of tea are drunk each day in Britain. No less than Queen Elizabeth loved it, and the brew is entrenched in the British way of life, from the regular tea break to the afternoon tea.
United Kingdom wedding traditions
Luckenbooth brooch
This brooch is of a Scottish origin, often given as a love token during betrothal or as a wedding brooch. The Luckenbooth is always designed with a heart and a crown, with most of them having two intertwined hearts topped with one crown. Whether you're getting married in Scotland or any part of the UK, you can exchange Luckenbooth brooches with each other.
Old, New, Borrowed, Blue
This intricate tradition has been kept in the UK and in Ireland since the 1800s. As the name implies, the couple receives four things during the wedding, and they usually come from the parents and closest friends. Some fathers give their daughters their mother's ring for something old. Mothers give the bride a brand new piece of jewelry while the couple's friends can lend something to them. Finally, a special part of the wedding can hand over a special blue colored thing to the couple. While you prepare for your UK destination wedding, think of the four things that you can ask from your family and friends.
Bagpipes
Music is one of the most essential elements of every wedding. If you want to incorporate a UK tradition to your wedding music, you will never go wrong with bagpipes. Surprise your guests with this traditional UK instrument by hiring a skilled bagpiper on your big day. The music from bagpipes is suitable for all kinds of wedding in any UK location!
Carrying the bride over the threshold
It was in 1900s when the British started to practice this tradition. Originally, the groom carries the bride to the threshold of their new home to protect her from the evil spirits. These days, this is practiced on the wedding day by carrying the bride from the altar to the doorstep of the venue to signify the beginning of their new life together.

Overground
Before thinking about anything travel-related, it's important to know that having an oyster card is a must when traveling in London. You will use it for buses, underground trains, overground trains, even for some river boat services. Aside from using the oyster card while traveling, the London Overground is a great option if you want open-air transportation for your UK trip.

Trains
Traveling via train, whether overground or underground, is probably the most convenient way to get around the UK. The UK rail network will not only take you to the rest of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland locations, but even to the mainland Europe. Since 1994, the UK rail networks have been connected to Europe via Lille in France. You can travel from London to Paris to Berlin, then Rome via train. Taxis
If you have some specific spots to visit and you prefer more privacy, getting around the UK via taxi will be the best option. We advice that you book taxis through reliable apps for your safety as you travel the unfamiliar streets of UK. As in other countries, take note that taking the taxi is more costly than public transportation.
Bicycle
If you want the cheapest mode of transportation in the UK, and the healthiest as well, take advantage of UK's bicycle hire scheme. The cost of Santander bikes starts from $2 for 24 hours with the initial 30 minutes being free. It's a more fun and healthy way for you and your loved one to get around the UK, plus you can stop anywhere you want to experience UK up close.
How much does it cost to have a micro wedding in United Kingdom?
The average cost of a traditional wedding in the UK is more or less 40,000 USD, but that will significantly decrease when you opt for a micro wedding. Even when you’re getting married in London, with usually expensive venues, a small wedding will pull the cost down to less than half or even lower. Remember, a smaller guest count always results in a cheaper wedding cost even in the UK. Choosing a UK countryside wedding venue, a cliff in Northern Ireland, or an elopement spot in Scotland is even more budget-friendly.
