Cost of a small wedding in Portugal

Small weddings in Portugal cost less than traditional US weddings, but several factors influence your final budget. Here's what matters most.

Ceremony & reception venue

Venue hire varies widely depending on location, exclusivity, and inclusions. A clifftop chapel costs differently than a historic palace.

Vendors & services

Photography, florals, catering, and entertainment are your main costs – our vendors range from budget-friendly to premium, but they're all reasonably priced.

Season & day of the week

Peak season weddings in May through September and Saturday weddings cost more – consider off-peak dates or weekday celebrations for better availability and pricing.

Number of guests

Catering, accommodation, and transport costs scale with guest count, but we'll be on hand to make sure all your guests have an amazing time.

Pre- and post-wedding events

Welcome dinners, day-after brunches, and guest activities add to your budget – we can help you prioritize what matters most and skip the rest.

When to start planning your micro wedding in Portugal

The earlier you start, the more choices you'll have – but even short timelines are possible with our planner's expertise and vendor relationships.

Bride and groom hold hands in a ceremony atop a terrace with a mountain backdrop during their destination wedding in Portugal

> 18 months in advance

Ideal for in-demand venues or peak season dates. Maximum choice, flexibility, and time to plan without pressure.

12–18 months in advance

The sweet spot for most couples – plenty of time to secure top vendors and venues, while keeping momentum and avoiding planning fatigue.

6–12 months in advance

Still achievable with our help. We'll use our vendor relationships to find availability and move quickly to lock in your preferred team and location.

< 6 months in advance

Tight but possible for flexible couples – expect fewer venue options and some vendor restrictions, but we've successfully planned beautiful weddings in as little as three months.

...they truly helped to create one of the best days of our lives.

- Rachael & Mike

Example wedding day timeline

Here's how a typical intimate Portuguese wedding day flows – your planner will customize this to suit your ceremony time, guest count, and personal preferences.

9am

Hair and make-up begin at your accommodation — a calm, unhurried morning with your closest friends and family, setting a relaxed tone for the day.

10am

Photographer arrives to capture getting-ready moments – natural, candid shots of you and your partner preparing in separate spaces before the ceremony.

11am

Guest transport departs for the venue; we coordinate pickups from hotels or villas so everyone arrives on time and together.

2pm

Ceremony begins. Whether it's a beachfront exchange of vows or a vineyard celebration, your officiant creates a heartfelt, personalized ceremony.

4pm

Cocktail hour and photos – guests enjoy drinks and canapés while you take portraits with your photographer in the venue's most beautiful spots.

7pm

Reception and dinner – an intimate multi-course meal or family-style feast, with toasts, laughter, and plenty of time to connect with every guest.

Travel & accommodation

Portugal is easy to reach from most of Europe and North America. We'll help you and your guests navigate moving around and finding comfortable places to stay.

Get in

Fly into Lisbon or Porto, with direct connections from major cities – both airports are well-served, modern, and an easy starting point for your Portuguese small wedding.

Get around

Rent a car for flexibility, or let us arrange private transfers – Portugal's roads are excellent, and most venues are within two hours of the main airports.

On-site accommodation

Many venues offer onsite rooms or villas – ideal for an intimate wedding weekend where everyone stays together and no one worries about transport.

Off-site accommodation

We'll recommend nearby hotels, guesthouses, or Airbnb options to suit all budgets, and coordinate group bookings or discounted rates where possible.

Our wedding packages

Choose from one of our fully customizable all-inclusive packages, or request a bespoke package for any of the venues we work with.

Where to have a small wedding in Portugal

Portugal offers stunning diversity. From historic Porto to sun-soaked Alentejo, each region brings its own character, landscapes, and wedding venues.

Porto

Portugal's second city blends old-world charm with riverfront beauty – think vineyard estates, historic quintas, and dramatic Atlantic coastline.

Alenquer

A peaceful wine region just north of Lisbon with rolling hills, traditional estates, and intimate venues. A great choice for couples seeking a quiet countryside wedding.

Alentejo

Portugal's golden heartland of cork forests, whitewashed villages, and endless skies – relaxed, rustic, and romantic, with the added bonus of fewer tourists than the coast.

Unique Portuguese venues for small weddings

  • Vineyards

Exchange vows among the vines with views over terraced hillsides and valleys. Wine estates offer elegance, on-site accommodation, and unforgettable sunsets.

Rustic charm meets modern comfort at traditional Portuguese farmhouses — private, peaceful, and ideal for couples who want a relaxed countryside celebration.

  • Palace hotels

If you're seeking timeless elegance without stuffiness, opt for a historic estate or manor house with manicured gardens, grand architecture, and impeccable service.

  • Picturesque beaches

Say your vows barefoot on the Algarve's golden sands — intimate beach weddings combine natural beauty with laid-back sophistication.

Best time to tie the knot in Portugal

Portugal enjoys mild weather year-round, but each season brings different light, landscapes, and pricing. Here's what to expect throughout the year.

Spring

March to May offers blooming gardens, comfortable temperatures, and fewer crowds – ideal for outdoor ceremonies accessorised with vibrant floral arrangements.

Summer

June to August brings guaranteed sunshine and long daylight hours. Peak wedding season means premium pricing but unforgettable golden-hour photography.

Fall

September to November deliver warm days, harvest-season beauty, and better availability. Top tip: this is one of our favourite times for vineyard weddings.

Winter

December to February is mild by European standards. You can enjoy cozy indoor celebrations and dramatic coastal light, with the added bonus of lower pricing and fewer tourists.

Choosing the date for your intimate Portuguese wedding

Your wedding date affects availability, pricing, and atmosphere — here's what to consider when choosing when planning a small wedding in Portugal.

Seasons

Spring and fall offer the best balance of weather, pricing, and availability. Summer guarantees sun but costs more, while winter delivers value and intimacy.

Holidays

Portuguese bank holidays and school breaks mean higher accommodation costs and busier venues, so check local calendars if you're flexible on timing.

A woman with a hat raising her hands in celebration while looking at the picturesque Portuguese cityscape

Day of the week

Friday and Sunday weddings often cost less than Saturdays, with better vendor availability. Weekday weddings deliver even more flexibility and savings.

Decide on your small Portuguese wedding ceremony

Bride and groom having an outdoor ceremony in a stone gazebo at the garden during their destination wedding in Portugal

Portugal welcomes all ceremony types and you can get married almost anywhere. Our planner will guide you through your options.

Symbolic

A personalised, non-legal ceremony that can happen anywhere and include any rituals or vows. Most couples choose a symbolic ceremony, then legalize it at home.

Legally binding

A civil ceremony conducted by a Portuguese registrar. This requires specific paperwork and advance planning, but allows you to marry legally in Portugal in almost any venue.

Religious

Catholic ceremonies in historic churches or chapels — Portugal's deep religious tradition offers beautiful settings for faith-based weddings.

Legal requirements to get married in Portugal

Getting legally married in Portugal as a foreigner is possible but requires advanced planning – here's what you need to know about the process.

Legal capacity

You'll need a birth certificate and a certificate of no impediment from your home country, proving you're free to marry.

Legal paperwork

Documents must be translated, notarized, and submitted to Portuguese authorities before your wedding. We'll guide you through every step.

FAQ about small weddings in Portugal

Do you provide full-service planning and coordination?

Yes — our packages include a dedicated planner, vendor coordination, and on-the-day management so you can relax and enjoy your wedding without stress.

Can foreigners get legally married in Portugal?

Yes, but it requires advance paperwork including a certificate of no Impediment and document translations – we'll guide you through the entire process.

How many guests can we bring?

Most small weddings have 20-60 guests, but we offer packages for bigger celebrations too. Every package includes a headcount, so you can easily choose one that matches your guest size.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

Most venues have indoor backup options, and we'll plan for weather contingencies in advance – Portugal's mild climate means rain is rare but manageable.

Do we need to visit Portugal before the wedding?

Not necessarily. Many of our couples plan entirely remotely using video calls, photos, and our local expertise, though some prefer a venue visit beforehand.

How much does it typically cost to host a wedding in Portugal?

The cost of small weddings depends on venue, guest count, and services. Each of our all-inclusive packages lists every detail and its approximate price.

Do we need to find and book the venue ourselves, or will you handle that?

We handle everything, from shortlisting venues to negotiating contracts and managing all venue communication, so you never have to chase anyone yourself. All you'll need to do is select a package with the venue included in it, and pay their invoice when we forward it to you.

Will you help us with accommodation and travel arrangements?

Absolutely – we coordinate guest accommodation, airport transfers, and day-of transport so everyone arrives on time and stress-free throughout your celebration.

Can we book you before we've chosen a date?

Yes – we recommend booking your planner first, as we'll help you choose the best date based on venue availability, pricing, and seasonal considerations.

Will you give us a choice of vendors?

We'll recommend the right professionals for every service, with narrowed down options where possible. You'll have the final say on creatives whose style speaks to you!
