Marry beside a clifftop chapel perched above the ocean

The Nossa Senhora Rocha, Our Lady of the Rock, is enclosed in a small fort with mysterious history. Its location marks it as a place of importance but there is no local mention of the structure until the 13th century, even though it is believed to be much older than that. The white chapel likely has its origins in the 3rd or 4th century and has been lovingly kept over the centuries. Legend says a vision of the Virgin appeared on this rock, and that King Dinis walled it to protect her.

The beach below carries a Blue Flag, with water rated excellent and a lifeguard through the summer. Stairs cut into the cliff are the only way down, which keeps the crowds thin. The cliffs shelter the sand when the wind gets up. Fishermen worked out of this cove long before anyone sunbathed in it. Juniper, wild olive and mastic grow along the top, and falcons, gulls and swifts nest in the rock face.

Praia da Marinha is 8.8 km along the coast and the Benagil sea cave about 9.2 km. Boats run to both from this stretch of water. Lagoa keeps waymarked cliff paths across the same headlands, so guests with a spare morning can walk them. Armação de Pêra, just east, has the nearest run of seafront restaurants and bars. All of it makes a Portuguese destination wedding here feel like a week rather than a day.

There is a car park right beside the monument, so cars and taxis pull up a short walk from where you stand. Faro is the airport to fly into, 57 km away. Lisbon is 264 km and Seville 255 km, if the fares work out better. A land train runs out from Armação de Pêra and stops here. Nothing is laid on from the site itself, so we arrange the transfers.

Getting to the ceremony ground is level. The forecourt runs on from the parking area with no steps. The surface is compacted sand and gravel rather than paving, so heels and small wheels need thinking about. The beach is a different matter, and the only way down is stairs cut into the cliff. There is no lift and no ramp, so guests who would rather not take them stay up top.

Ceremonies happen out on the point, not inside the chapel. That is a working place of pilgrimage and stays shut for weddings. What we set up is an arch, an aisle and chairs for up to 70, facing the open water. The paperwork is the real work here. The site needs a licence from Lagoa town hall and clearance from the maritime police. Our planner in Portugal files both, then walks the ground beforehand to settle where the arch goes. Late afternoon is the hour to book.

Photographers get three quite different backdrops within a minute of each other. There is the chapel itself, white spire against blue, and its west porch with the three old arches. There is the parapet, where the drop falls away to a cove of ochre sand and turquoise shallows. Then there is the viewing area, looking east along the coast to Armação de Pêra and on toward Albufeira. Late light turns the cliff the color of honey.

There is no reception here, and that is worth saying plainly rather than discovering later. The promontory has no kitchen, no bar and nothing to plug into. Couples marry on the rock and then move on to dinner. Most often that is a seafront restaurant just east, or a villa a short drive inland. On the first Sunday of August the village comes out here for the festa. Mass is said in the chapel, then the image of Nossa Senhora da Rocha is carried down to the sand. The sea is blessed there, and the fishermen and their boats with it. It is the one weekend of the year the rock belongs to Porches rather than to visitors. We plan around it, and couples marrying nearby that week often go and watch.

The promontory is public and stays public on your wedding day - it cannot be closed. Visitors walk up all day for the view, whatever else is happening. So the trick here is the hour rather than exclusivity. Early morning and the last hours before sunset are quiet; the middle of a July afternoon is busy. Strangers on the parapet tend to fall silent and smile through the vows.

There is no shade up here and no room indoors to retreat to, which shapes when you book. Ceremonies go late in the day through high summer, when the open rock takes the full sun. Wind is the other thing to plan for: the cove below is sheltered, the top of the promontory is not. The official bathing season runs June through September, and the promontory itself is open all year.
