Get married at a 1498 ivy-clad manor in Alenquer wine country

The estate dates from the 1490s and stayed with one family, the Guimarães, until 2006, which is why the house still reads like a home. Each generation reshaped it a little. A 16th-century entrance arch and green-and-white Moorish tiles sit beside coffered wooden ceilings and a romantic porch over the entrance courtyard. Turismo de Portugal lists the building for its architectural interest. The wine estate and the manor went their separate ways in 2006 and 2008. The Solar opened to weddings in 2015 and kept its rooms, chapel and gardens as they were.

Alenquer is one of Portugal's oldest wine regions, and estates such as Quinta de Chocapalha and Casa Santos Lima run tastings and vineyard tours a short drive away. Óbidos, the walled town with a castle, is about an hour north, and Sintra about an hour west. The Atlantic is 42 kilometers away at Praia Azul, with Santa Cruz's surf beach just beyond it. Lisbon airport is 47 kilometers away, about 45 minutes by road, and the manor has a private car park that coaches can get in and out of. The manor is set up for guests with limited mobility, with an accessible toilet and a ceremony spot on level ground. The front garden's paths are sand and gravel, and the garden terrace sits up a flight of stone steps. A wheelchair user does best with vows on the courtyard lawn and dinner in the tent. There are no bedrooms at Solar de Pancas, and none within walking distance, so the day ends with a drive rather than a stroll upstairs. Our couples usually base the whole party in Lisbon, where a hotel doubles as the weekend's meeting point, or in Alenquer for something quieter. What the house does give you is room on the day: four support rooms inside the manor for getting ready, a quiet corner between moments and a safe place for the dress.

You can marry legally here. The registrar travels out for a civil ceremony in the garden or inside the manor, and the house sets up the chairs and table at no extra cost. Most couples choose the front courtyard. A circular lawn sits in the middle of the sandy parterre, and the ivy-clad facade fills every photo. The chapel is there for a religious ceremony or a blessing, and the halls take an indoor ceremony when the sky won't cooperate. A symbolic ceremony with a celebrant of your choice works in any of them.

The front garden is a formal parterre: four lawn quadrants around a circular island. Hedge walls of clipped cypress enclose it, and two tall palms stand guard by the house. Below the garden terrace, down twin stone stairs, a lawn spreads under broad old trees. That's where the cocktail hour happens, with festoon lights slung between the branches and antique armchairs on the grass. Behind the house, a rough stone arch opens onto the walled courtyard that holds the tent. It's a compact estate, so nobody walks far between moments.

A big wedding dines in the tent, a transparent marquee on a timber deck in the walled courtyard beside the house. It's hired separately and lit with strings of bulbs. Smaller weddings eat inside the manor instead, in a hall with a painted timber ceiling, iron chandeliers, old paintings on the walls and a dado of blue-and-white azulejos. Hosting a small wedding in there feels like entertaining at home. The venue takes weddings from about 30 guests to 270, and tables, chairs, linen, centerpieces and base decoration all come with the space.

All the food comes from Páteo Velho, the Alenquer caterer that cooks in the manor's own kitchen, so there's no outside catering to arrange. The menus are Portuguese: cod and black pork for the mains, then cheese and fruit buffets and a late supper of caldo verde and mini steaks. The open bar is part of the package rather than an extra. The wine on the tables comes from Quinta de Pancas, the estate that surrounds the manor and grows Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Arinto on the slopes behind it. Red, white and rosé from its Pancas range are poured with dinner and again at the open bar. Around them sit the Portuguese classics: moscatel and port for the welcome, ginjinha and Licor Beirão after dinner, and a fresh bar of gin, mojitos and caipirinhas if you want one. One couple asked where to buy a case before they'd even got home.

The party happens on the tent's deck for big weddings and inside the house for small ones. Your DJ plugs into the house system, four speakers on an acoustic limiter, and after dinner bands play digital rather than acoustic instruments. Small weddings wind down at 3am; larger ones can run to 5am. Fireworks are a case-by-case conversation with the house, so ask early if they're on your list.

Solar de Pancas hosts one wedding a day, and you have the whole of it: the halls and lounges, the gardens, the toilets and the car park, from setup to last drink. No other guests, no hotel corridor, no second party in the next room. Rain has a plan here. The tent puts a roof over the whole dinner and party, and the halls inside the manor take a ceremony or a smaller dinner when the garden isn't an option. A wet forecast means the ceremony moves indoors and the rest of the day stays exactly as planned. In summer, the cocktail lawn sits under big shade trees, and the tent's clear roof keeps the evening light. Come autumn, the ivy turns red and the manor photographs at its best.
