Get married at a farmhouse with a modern flair near Barcelona

Mas Casamitjana is first recorded in the 14th century. It grew to its present shape in the mid-1700s under Joseph Casamitjana, whose name is still carved above several doors. Mas is short for masia, Catalan for farmhouse. The barns housed animals and machinery over two levels, and L'Era was the threshing floor. Its old hand-made tiles now pave the courtyard. Jo and Duncan left south London in June 2016 and spent two years on the restoration. Duncan had produced the Bestival festivals, Jo had worked in film, and the name came from a Talking Heads song.

The prehistoric Coves del Toll are a quarter of an hour away, ticketed together with Moià's museum in the birthplace of Rafael Casanova. The Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany and its 12th-century cloister sit in the next village, ten minutes down the road. Montserrat's mountain monastery makes a half-day trip. Wine drinkers head for the Pla de Bages cellars around Manresa or on to Penedès cava country. Marked walking and mountain-bike routes start from every Moianès village. The nearest sand is Barcelona's coast, well over an hour away.

Fly into Barcelona El Prat, 95 km by road, or Girona, a similar drive from the other side. Rodalies trains from Barcelona Sants reach Vic, whose station is half an hour from the house. The last stretch runs through the Montví de Baix houses and onto a gravel track marked with the venue's wooden signs. Satnav sometimes offers a tractor path instead, so the written directions matter. Taxis don't pass out here, which is why our local planner in Spain books the coaches and transfers well ahead. Guests park on the gravel forecourt.

Four en-suite rooms take the whole ground and lower ground floors of the house and sleep twelve. Louis Armstrong, usually the couple's suite, and Ella Fitzgerald each have a king bed. Duke Ellington and Nina Simone are family suites with a second small room. Two nights come with the hire, check-in from 4pm the day before and check-out by 1pm the day after. There's a self-catering breakfast room, and farm-shop hampers can be added. Everyone else stays in the masías, B&Bs and spa hotels of the Moianès and Vic. The venue keeps a list with a few negotiated discounts.

Weddings here are symbolic. The venue isn't licensed for civil marriages, and non-residents can't marry legally in Spain in any case. Our couples sign the papers at home first, and our planner can assist with the documents. Then pick your spot: L'Era with the triangle arch against the stone wall, or La Feixa's lawn with the Pyrenees behind you. Higher up, El Mirador offers wide grass, and El Paddock has mown paths through wild grass to an antique iron gate. Indoors, the barn's brick arch does the framing. A tufted vintage sofa for the two of you is a house tradition, and confetti has to be biodegradable.

The estate runs to 12 hectares of forest and field, but the wedding lives on the terraces stacked around the house. El Barri, the walled courtyard paved with the old threshing-floor tiles, opens straight off the barns for welcome drinks. Steps climb to L'Era, a wide earthen yard edged with lavender and dry-stone walls and strung with festoon lights. La Feixa is a fenced lawn below it, El Mirador the big grassy viewpoint above, El Paddock the top field with views all round. Balinese parasols shade the aperitivo. La Caseta, the little blue-doored house on L'Era's edge, works as a bar.

Dinner seats 100 in Els Graners up to the brick arch, or about 120 with tables running through it into the second barn. Long trestle tables, candlelight and timber rafters set the scene. Outside, L'Era takes a banquet under the stars, and El Mirador has room for a marquee or tipis. The venue tops out at 180 guests, with under-threes not counted. Most couples who ask us about it are planning for 40 to 60. Bernardo & Seana brought more than sixty guests from Canada for their April wedding here in 2025. That makes it one of the roomier wedding venues we work with in Spain.

Caravan Made is the exclusive caterer and the only supplier the venue insists on. Sílvia and Javi began in 2013 with a restored 1970s caravan that still stands in L'Era. Javi cooked at El Celler de Can Roca before that. Choose a sit-down dinner, family style or a food-market wedding of stations. Expect paella, croquetas and jamón alongside ceviche, tacos and bao, seasonal and mostly local. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus are standard, and a tasting about six months out is included. Drinks run from natural Catalan wines and cava to Montseny craft beer on draft. You can bring your own cake.

The party belongs to the second barn, where a professional sound system, installed lighting and a huge mirrorball are built in. El Barri is the spill-out space under the stars. A DJ, a band or both are fine, and the bar can run as a three-hour open bar or a paying bar. The included celebration lasts nine hours and extra hours can be added. The music and the bar stop together, and 3am is the hard finish. Late-night dancing with stone on three sides and glass on the fourth is what this place was rebuilt for.

This is an openly LGBTQIA+ friendly venue. Same-sex couples have married here with a drag queen on the bill. The whole place was designed for couples who want no cookie-cutter wedding at all. Because ceremonies are symbolic, any celebrant, any wording and any mix of faiths works. Jo speaks fluent Spanish and gets by in Catalan, so nothing gets lost between you and the local suppliers.

Children are welcome, with picnic benches in the courtyard and a lot of grass to run on. If ten or more children aged three to ten are coming, the venue requires a professional babysitter on the night. We factor that in early. The two family suites in the house each sleep two adults and two kids, a few steps from the party.

Reuse is the design principle: old timber, stone and the threshing-floor tiles were repurposed rather than replaced. Every kitchen has a recycling station, the bathrooms carry natural Yope toiletries, and the surrounding fields are farmed organically by local growers. Single-use décor and favors are asked away, and guests are encouraged to take the flowers home at the end of the night.

Two nights on site turn the wedding into a weekend. Speeches get rehearsed in the courtyard the night before, and a second-day barbecue or slow breakfast with farm-shop hampers follows. Moià's Sunday market makes the farewell outing. The event spaces can be hired again for a gathering on the day before or after. The season runs April to October. At 700 meters the plateau is cooler than the coast, so summer afternoons are kinder and evenings ask for a wrap. Rain plans are part of the design. Els Graners seat 120 and open onto El Barri, a bespoke awning can cover half the courtyard, and El Mirador takes a marquee. Couples who've had a twenty-minute thunderstorm here moved the speeches indoors and carried on. No weddings are held from November to March.
