Get married in Spain

Destination Wedding in Spain

Celebrate your destination wedding in Spain and fall in love with the unmatched character and beauty of this sunny gem of the Mediterranean. Below is what getting married in Spain involves — gathered by our planners on the ground.

The charm of the Mediterranean

Why couples choose to get married in Spain

Our couples fall in love with Spain for countless reasons. The striking beauty of the country and its unmatched character create an ambience for celebrations that last well into the early hours.

THE VIEWS

Coastal views of the Mediterranean

Golden coastlines are what brings most travelers to Spain. Once here, you will fall in love not only with the spotless sea views, but discover a wealth of architecture, art, and beauty all throughout the country.

THE WEATHER

Warm hospitality and warm weather

Spain stays pleasantly warm all year round, making it a wonderful place to get married outdoors. Added to that couples love the warm welcome and famed hospitality of Spain's beautiful regions.

THE FIESTAS & SIESTAS

A place that knows how to celebrate

A love for enjoying sunny afternoons and the slow things in life, paired with the art of throwing a great fiesta with incomparable food, music, and ambience makes Spain a perfect place to tie the knot.

TAILORED TO YOUR VISION & BUDGET

Say 'I do' in Spain with our customizable all-inclusive packages

Choosing the location of your Spanish destination wedding

Known as 'the nation of nations', Spain's regions vary greatly in character, look, and feel. Let us guide you beyond the beaches and show you the gems of wedding destinations in Spain.

Golden beaches

Mediterranean & Atlantic coasts

Heading down from Barcelona along the Mediterranean coast, you will soon encounter small beach-side towns and large cities like Valencia and Málaga along the shores.

Island paradise

Balearic Islands

Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza offer a wedding setting, where turquoise coves meet whitewashed fincas and pine-covered hillsides. Each island has its own character, from Ibiza's bohemian glamour to Menorca's quiet, untouched coastline.

Melange of cultures

Andalusia

Andalusia is where Spain's Moorish past comes alive, with cities like Seville, Granada, and Córdoba offering palaces, courtyards, and tiled patios as a backdrop for your wedding. Add in flamenco, orange blossom-scented streets, and warm southern hospitality, and it's easy to see why so many couples fall for this region.

Cosmopolitan cities

Madrid & Central Spain

Spain's capital is stylish, cool, and cosmopolitan. A wealth of tasteful venues for your Spanish wedding awaits you here. Just a little further North, you will find Castilla y León dotted with fairytale castles and mountain peaks.

Basque Country & beyond

Northern Spain

The coastlines of the Northern Spain are also home to the culturally unique Basque Country. Further inland, you will encounter one of Spain's perhaps best kept secrets: the balmy Asturias is a popular destination for locals to escape the summer heat of the cities. Both are beautifully off-the-radar wedding destinations to explore.

We still get emotional thinking about our wedding in Spain this past September.

GOT A DATE?

When to get married in Spain

Each season brings its own beauty to the country. The best time to get married in Spain will depend on what you envision for the ambience and the practicalities of your wedding day.

March – May

Spring

Spring is our favorite time to get married in Spain. From March to May, the country comes alive after the winter months. The mild weather makes outdoor ceremonies especially enjoyable, while the vibrant natural scenery creates a fresh and lush backdrop.

Best for

  • lush garden ceremonies
  • outdoor dinners in the evening
  • experiencing local festivities

June – August

Summer

Summer in Spain is all about sunshine, long days, and celebrations that last well into the warm nights. From June to early September, the coast comes alive for beach weddings and outdoor receptions. Just keep in mind that temperatures can be high in some regions, making seaside venues particularly popular.

Best for

  • true Spanish beach life
  • outdoor ceremonies under shaded trees
  • long days and long celebrations

September – November

Autumn

Between September and November, vineyards, countryside estates, and historic venues are surrounded by rich golden and earthy tones. The cooler temperatures create a comfortable setting for guests, while the end of the main tourist season gives you more room to breathe, even in the most popular Spanish destinations.

Best for

  • relaxed outdoor ceremonies with indoor backup
  • wine tastings and culinary experiences
  • post-summer calm in popular regions

December – February

Winter

Many parts of Spain remain sunny and pleasantly warm even in the winter months. If you are craving snow, however, head to the mountainous parts of Spain to experience a white wedding. Since winter is the off-peak season here, your budget will go further, you will encounter fewer tourists, and some sought-after wedding venues might have more availabilities.

Best for

  • calm and slow-going atmosphere
  • affordable wedding venues
  • mild weather in the south and snow in the mountains

Wedding ceremony types in Spain

In Spain, the practical choice for most foreign couples is a symbolic ceremony. Here's how the three ceremony types compare — and what we recommend.

Civil

A civil wedding is legally binding. However, Spain has strict requirements that make it almost impossible for couples without Spanish nationality and residency to get legally married in Spain. We recommend a symbolic wedding instead.

Religious

A Catholic wedding is the only way for foreign couples to have a legally binding wedding in Spain. Wedding ceremonies of other faiths can, of course, equally be celebrated in Spain but they will not be recognized by the state as legally binding.

Symbolic

For a symbolic ceremony no paperwork is required and you have full freedom to choose your venue and your vows. Most of our couples take care of the legalities of their wedding back home, and choose Spain for their symbolic wedding celebration.

Requirements for legal weddings in Spain

Civil weddings and Catholic weddings are the only legally-binding wedding types in Spain. To avoid the bureaucracy most of our couples choose a symbolic ceremony instead.

Citizenship or residence for civil weddings

For civil ceremonies, at least one of the spouses must be a Spanish citizen or have held residence in Spain for a minimum of two years. For Catholic weddings, which are also legally binding, this is not required.

Required documents

Birth certificates, certificate of no impediment to marry, and passports are required documents for all legal weddings. All must be translated to Spanish and accompanied by an apostille.

Legal Catholic weddings

Catholic weddings are also legally recognized in Spain. In addition to the documents listed above, the Catholic church also requires documents proving your baptism, confirmation and communion, as well as a pre-marriage course.

Timeline for legal weddings

The civil documents must be submitted at least 6 months before the wedding day. We recommend beginning your planning a year prior to your desired wedding day to have peace of mind in case of any delays.

Elopement, intimate wedding, or vow renewal?

Whether you speak your vows just to each other or in front of dozens of your guests, and whether you speak them for the first time or reaffirm them after a decade of marriage — share your wishes with us and let us help you bring your celebration to life.

JUST FOR TWO

Elopement

In the original sense, an elopement includes just the two of you, but today it often includes a handful of loved ones. An elopement can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish.

Spain vs. other wedding destinations

Weighing a few countries against each other? Here's where Spain stands next to our other Mediterranean wedding destinations.

Italy

Italy is the classic — lakeside villas, Tuscan vineyards, and one of the most developed wedding industries in Europe, usually at a higher price than Spain. Italian celebrations run elegant and unhurried; Spanish ones run loud, late, and full of dancing. If you want polished romance, look to Italy. If you want a wedding that feels like a fiesta, stay right here.

Portugal

Portugal, Spain's Atlantic neighbor, shares the warmth and often edges it on value — it's one of Europe's most affordable wedding destinations. Portugal feels soulful and gently paced, with ocean views at its heart. Spain counters with hotter summers, bolder flavors, and higher-energy celebrations. Choose Portugal for laid-back coastal calm; choose Spain for color, rhythm, and nights that end at sunrise.

A single day or a full wedding week?

In Spain, one day rarely feels like enough. Many couples add a welcome dinner, a beach day, a proper fiesta — we'll happily plan as many days as you like.

SHORT & SWEET

Ceremony only

For elopements with a handful of guests or just you, our couples often choose a half day. A heartfelt ceremony, a photoshoot to capture the day, and a dinner to celebrate.

A DAY OF LOVE

Classic 1-day wedding

A full day to celebrate your Spanish wedding with classic elements like a reception, plenty of time for a photoshoot, first dances, and dancing into the night.

EXTENDED CELEBRATION

2-day wedding

Extend the wedding experience by reserving time before and after your day. Plan a welcome dinner with everyone on arrival, or a post-wedding brunch in the morning.

LASTING ADVENTURE

3-day wedding or more

Weave in local experiences like tastings or boat tours, enjoy lazy afternoons by the pool, taste the flavors of Spain with relaxed dinners, and explore Spain to the fullest.

From the moment we met our wonderful wedding planner, Jill, our experience was nothing short of magical.

A timeline for your wedding day in Spain

Spanish weddings run late — and that's half the charm. To dodge the afternoon heat, many of our one-day celebrations in Spain flow like this.

12pm: getting ready

Stylists arrive for the bride and her bridal party. The photographer captures the getting-ready moments.

5pm: first looks

First looks with the parents, loved ones, and between the couple — captured by the photographer.

6:30pm: ceremony

The musician plays your song, you walk down the aisle, and you say your vows as the afternoon heat softens.

7:30pm: cocktail hour

Cava and tapas circulate on trays as the band plays into the golden hour.

8pm: group photos

The photographer gathers everyone for group photos in all the combinations you need.

8:30pm: couple photoshoot

The two of you slip away for a sunset photoshoot while your guests enjoy their drinks.

9:30pm: dinner

Dinner under the stars, Spanish-style: unhurried courses with toasts and speeches in between.

11:30pm: first dance

Father-daughter and mother-son dances, then your first dance together opens the party.

12am: cake cutting

The wedding cake is cut to cheers — a sweet pause before the dancing continues.

Into the small hours: fiesta

The DJ takes over and the dancing carries on till late — this is Spain, after all. Transfers are arranged for guests not staying on site.

Experiences around your Big Day in Spain

Make a proper trip of it — Spain rewards couples who stay a few extra days. Here are some favorites to build around your wedding.

CULINARY EXPERIENCES

Tapas, tastings & more

It might be almost criminal to travel to Spain without exploring its rich culinary landscapes. Taste the immense variety of Spanish tapas, experience private dining with regional produce, or sample local wines directly at the vineyards.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Guided tours

Thanks to its eventful history, Spain is a treasure of cultures, arts, and architecture styles. Depending on where you are, you will see a different face of Spain. Let local guides show you why they love their city, and learn about the history of the setting you chose for your love story.

Beach & sea experiences

Mediterranean days

Long stretches of golden sands or hidden away swimming coves — Spain's shorelines surely have it all. Charter a boat for the day and sail across the Mediterranean, stopping for a swim, enjoying wine on board, and seeing the sun set above the cities.

Artistic experiences

Classes & workshops

Traditional artistic craft is alive and thriving in Spain. Local artisans can guide you through the history and the art of their craft, and teach you how to create traditional ceramics, weaves, abanicos (special fans), or how to prepare the local flavors of Spanish food.

Regional flavors

Spanish wedding cuisine

Let season and place lead your wedding menu in Spain. Each of Spain's region, from Andalusian to Castilian, has its own flavors for you to cherish.

Starters and drinks

A glimpse of Spanish flavors

A beautiful way to start the culinary part of your celebration, is to sample tapas and classically Spanish bites. Canapés with Iberian ham, gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), patatas bravas, or chilled gazpacho offer a glimpse into classic Spanish favorites.

Add Spanish cocktails, local wines, and refreshing beers to your reception to round the experience off.

The main courses

Beyond the paella

Originating in the sunny lands of Valencia, the paella is perhaps the most famous of Spanish dishes. But go beyond this flavorful classic, and explore the tastes of Spain's other regions.

Catalonia's Mar i Muntanya (sea and mountains), Andalucía's Tortilla de Camarones, or Madrid's Callos a la Madrileña, Galicia's mussels — the options are limitless.

Sweet finale

Churros and cakes

Wedding cakes in Spain today follow the shared European tradition: keeping away from heavy fondant, the cake is usually a lighter creation that fits the summer climates. You can infuse local flavors of citrus or almonds into the taste and look of your cake.

Another all-time favorite sweet treat in Spain are the churros dipped in chocolate.

Thank you Jill, you captured our wishes and dreams and made them happen on our big day!

Wedding traditions in Spain

Spanish wedding culture is warm and full of life, with togetherness at its very core. Customs differ from region to region — folding a few into your day gives it a sense of place and nods to this country's rich heritage.

Lace veil full of history

Mantilla

Defined by its laced-edges and the circular shape, the mantilla veil is worn at the top of the head, unlike gathered veils that drape right at the crown. The veil flows down around the shoulders in a curved line, and the lace softly frames the bride's face in a halo-like way.

This traditional wedding veil is a beautiful way to include a nod to Spanish traditions for a destination wedding in Spain.

The bride wore orange blossoms

Azahar

The custom of wearing orange blossoms at weddings in Spain began due to the Moorish influence when orange trees were introduced in regions like Seville, Andalusia, and Valencia. Because the trees blossom and produce their fruits at the same time, they became a symbol for prosperity.

Over time, brides began incorporating the blossoms into their wedding attire, be it as a subtle flower crown, as part of their florals, or as their wedding scent.

Gifted golden coins

Las Arras

The tradition of the arras, thirteen golden coins, is performed in a beautiful gesture during the ceremony: the groom gifts the delicate coins to his bride, upon which she gifts them back to him. This gesture symbolizes that whatever belongs to one, equally belongs to the other.

Las arras is a small ritual, but a meaningful one. The golden coins are kept as cherished mementos and might be passed down to future generations.

She truly did everything with love, and we felt it every step of the way.

TRANSPORT

Getting around Spain

Spain is big, sunny, and superbly connected — planes, fast trains, and good roads make getting around simple.

Flying in

If you are flying into Spain, chances are you will be arriving in one of the major international airports like Madrid or Barcelona. From here, you can either take a connecting inland flight (these are very frequent and often budget-friendly), or travel on by private transport or public transport.

If you are getting married on one of Spain's islands, a flight is the easiest option, though ferries also operate some routes.

Trains

The Spanish rail network is the most sustainable and often the fastest way to get around. In fact, Spain has the second-largest high-speed train network in the world, just after China. We recommend booking your tickets well in advance.

For a special journey, consider booking a luxurious sleeper train. With your own suite and a restaurant on board, you can explore Spain in true old-world elegance.

Rental car

If you'd like to explore Spain's more far-flung spots, you will find it easiest to rent a car. When venturing outside of the cities, especially if you are exploring some of Spain's calmer regions like Asturias in the north, public transportation will limit you.

On the other hand, if you are staying in or close to the cities, we recommend skipping the car. Spain's cities are beautifully walkable and have a great public transport system.

HOTELS & CO.

Staying in Spain

Spain's places to stay are half the fun — paradores, fincas, and boutique hotels full of character.

Boutique hotels

A treasure-trove of boutique hotels are dotted all over the country. Some offer a coastal atmosphere, others bring you closer to history with old-world interiors — tell us your wishes and let our local planner help you find your favorite place.

Paradores

A selection of truly special places to stay in Spain are the so called Paradores. This state-run network of elegant hotels, first established by King Alfonso XIII, highlights historic spaces in scenic Spanish landscapes.

Haciendas & Fincas

Haciendas are traditional, sprawling estates that have opened their doors to travelers. Many have been lovingly transformed into luxurious stays. Fincas are their smaller cousins, intimate country-side villas surrounded by gardens.

Spain compared to other European wedding destinations

How does a wedding in Spain compare with the rest of Europe? A quick rundown:

Cost

While there is much variance, getting married in Spain is often more affordable than in other sunny wedding destinations such as Italy.

Venues

Spain as a wedding destination is becoming more popular and more and more wedding venues become available to international guests.

Best time to marry

We love the late spring or early autumn months for weddings in Spain, but it will truly depend on what your priorities are. We're happy to advise.

Vibes

Laid-back afternoons, late dinners, vibrant colors, and unforgettable celebrations. Spain's character is full of warmth and joy for the shared moments of life.

Vendors

An ever-growing wedding industry in Spain means a good selection of talented wedding vendors. Some less popular destinations might have fewer choice for vendors, but many are willing to travel.

Logistics

Spain is easy to get around, it is safe, and welcoming to visitors from all over. The only challenge might be that some venues and vendors speak limited English and you would benefit from a local Spanish-speaking planner.

Quick facts

What to know before your wedding trip to Spain

Before you pack for Spain, here are the practical essentials.

Currency & paying

The currency in Spain is the Euro. Most places accept payments by credit cards but — as anywhere in Europe — we recommend keeping some cash on hand as well.

Languages spoken

The main language in Spain is Castilian (what most know as Spanish). Additionally, you will encounter regional languages like Catalan, Basque, or Galician.

Major holidays

Spain celebrates the major Christian holidays all over the country. But its regions have special celebrations like the Semana Santa or Las Fallas that are not to be missed.

Tipping culture

Tipping in Spain is not required but it is customary. It is usual to simply round up to the next few Euros. Tipping your wedding vendors is a nice gesture but not a necessity.

WE HAVE THE ANSWERS

FAQs about getting married in Spain

Can we legally get married in Spain as foreigners?

A Catholic ceremony is the only realistic route to a legally binding wedding in Spain for most foreign couples — a civil ceremony requires Spanish nationality or residency, making it effectively off the table. Most of our couples choose a symbolic ceremony instead: full freedom over your venue and vows, no paperwork, and the legal side taken care of back home. It's the most popular choice by far.

What's the best time of year to get married in Spain?

Spring (March to May) is our favorite — mild weather, blooming gardens, and Spain at its most lively before the summer heat arrives. Early autumn (September to November) is equally beautiful: comfortable temperatures, vineyards in harvest, and popular venues with a little more breathing room. Summer is spectacular on the coast, though very hot inland. Winter is mild in Andalusia and the islands, and genuinely snowy in the mountains.

Which part of Spain should we choose for our wedding?

Spain is wonderfully varied, and the right region depends on what draws you. Andalusia brings Moorish palaces, orange blossom-scented streets, and flamenco energy. Catalonia offers Barcelona rooftops and elegant fincas. The Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca — each have their own distinct character. Northern Spain's Basque Country is beautifully off-the-radar. Tell Jill what feels right and she'll guide you from there.

What does a wedding in Spain typically cost?

Spain is one of Europe's better-value wedding destinations for the quality and variety on offer. Simple celebrations focused on the essentials sit at the more accessible end of the scale, while intimate weddings with guests and a full day vary more depending on venue, region, and season. Peak summer at sought-after venues sits at the higher end. Our fixed-price packages make the costs clear from the outset.

Will we face any language barriers planning a wedding in Spain?

Not with us. Jill, your dedicated wedding planner in Spain, handles all communication with local venues and vendors in Spanish on your behalf. You'll never need to navigate a language conversation yourself. And across Spain's cities and wedding venues, English is widely spoken, so the whole experience — from venue visits to the wedding day itself — runs comfortably.

Is a symbolic ceremony legally binding in Spain?

No — and that's precisely why nearly all of our couples choose one. Since civil weddings in Spain generally require residency, the practical route is simple: take care of the legal signing at home, then have the wedding that matters — any venue, any vows, any language — under the Spanish sun.

How far in advance should we plan our Spanish wedding?

Around 9 to 12 months is comfortable for peak dates — May, June, and September evenings at fincas and haciendas go first. Because most of our Spanish weddings are symbolic, there's little paperwork pressure; the timeline is really about securing the venue and vendors you love.

What time of day do Spanish weddings happen?

Later than you might expect — and that's the magic. To dodge the afternoon heat, ceremonies often start toward sunset, dinner lands around 9 or 10pm, and the dancing carries on into the small hours. We shape your timeline around golden light and cool evening air.

Will our guests get around Spain easily?

Yes — Spain is superbly connected, with major airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, and Seville and one of Europe's best high-speed rail networks. English is common in coastal and tourist areas, and we arrange transfers wherever venues sit further out.

Do you plan same-sex weddings in Spain?

Absolutely. Spain was one of the first countries in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, back in 2005, and remains one of Europe's most welcoming places to celebrate. All of our venues and packages are open to every couple.
