Lake-side rococo palace for Salzburg weddings

Rococo, and committed to it. Johann Kleber's white stucco runs across the ceilings like fabric caught mid-motion, and the Marble Hall carries an 18th-century painted vision of the four corners of the earth - elephants and dragons for Asia, llamas for the Americas, horses and oxen for Europe. The salons each take a different mood: gilded Commedia dell'arte panels in one, blue-green chinoiserie and a tall white tiled stove in another. Those panels came from an Italian palazzo in 1930 and are protected heritage.

Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian began the palace in 1736, with the Scottish Benedictine Bernhard Stuart as his master builder. His heart is still buried under the chapel floor. In 1918 the theater director Max Reinhardt bought the place and spent twenty years bringing it back, adding the library and the Venetian Salon and staging performances on the terrace. In 1920, in the corner room now called the Red Salon, he and two friends sketched out what became the Salzburg Festival.

Schloss Hellbrunn and its trick fountains are four and a half kilometers south. Hohensalzburg Fortress is a twenty-five minute walk uphill, or a funicular ride if you'd rather arrive unruffled. Beyond that it's Mozart's city: the cathedral, the Getreidegasse, the coffee houses, and river boats in summer. The Salzkammergut lakes and the Bavarian mountains are both inside an easy morning's drive, so a guest with a free day never runs short of somewhere to go.

A path circles the Leopoldskroner Weiher with the palace in view the whole way, and it's the walk everyone ends up doing. Bicycles are lent to guests year-round and reach the old town in minutes. There's a fitness room in the Meierhof, mini golf on the grounds, and an outdoor swimming pool next door open from May to September, with a voucher from reception. Guided tours open rooms that normally stay shut, which is a good thing to give arriving guests the day before.

Salzburg airport is seven kilometers away, so guests can land and be at the palace inside half an hour. Munich is a hundred and eighty kilometers by road and the usual choice for transatlantic flights, with Linz and Innsbruck further out. The main station is under six kilometers, and city bus 11 stops at the palace gates. On-site parking and two electric charging points are available, though spaces are limited.

Both the palace and the Meierhof are broadly accessible, and the ground-floor Great Hall opens level onto the terrace where ceremonies happen. It's a 1736 building, so expect a doorstep here and there, uneven historic floors, and some narrow passages between rooms. The garden paths are gravel throughout. Sixty-seven bedrooms means most wedding parties sleep where they celebrate. Twelve suites sit inside the palace, including Max Reinhardt's own former apartment, looking over the park, the lake or the fortress. Fifty-five contemporary rooms fill the Meierhof across the courtyard. One practical note worth knowing: the palace suites have no air conditioning, because heritage rules don't allow it, so fans are provided - the Meierhof rooms are air-conditioned. Everyone breakfasts in the Marble Hall.

You can marry legally here. The City of Salzburg lists the Schloss as one of its official ceremony locations, so the registrar comes out to you and the marriage is valid the moment it's done. The terrace is the one everyone comes for: gravel underfoot, box hedging either side, the seahorses and the gate framing the lake. The formal parterre steps down to it from the palace. Further out, the Mundheim Garden runs between the Meierhof bar and the water, and the Forgotten Garden is deliberately left half-wild for anyone who wants to wander off mid-afternoon. In February the reeds go bronze and the mountain turns white - winter here photographs beautifully.

Two rooms carry the celebration. The Great Hall sits on the ground floor and opens straight onto the terrace, taking around a hundred for a standing reception, a ceremony or the dancing. Above it, the Marble Hall seats up to a hundred and thirty under a ceiling ten meters up, with balconies facing the fortress and the lake. For a smaller table, the Venetian Salon opens through to the White Salon and seats thirty by candlelight. Full catered weddings here are built around a substantial guest list. If you're a smaller group, the ceremony books on its own, with drinks and canapes afterward on the terrace.

The palace kitchen cooks upscale Austrian food built around what's in season locally, with menus and buffets worked out with you rather than picked off a list. There's no restaurant here and that's a deliberate choice, so the kitchen's attention goes to your event instead of a daily service. If you'd rather bring your own caterer, the Schloss runs that as a separate arrangement and outside caterers do work here regularly. The Meierhof bar handles the informal end, daily until ten.

Dogs are welcome, up to two per room, with a blanket, a bowl and waste bags waiting when you arrive. They can join you in the park and on the grounds but not in the dining rooms, so plan someone to sit with yours during dinner. Seven hectares of lawn, lake path and woodland means a dog that has travelled a long way gets a proper run before the ceremony. Do let us know at booking rather than on the day.

A wedding here normally runs while the hotel is occupied, so you have your rooms and your spaces rather than the whole estate. That said, the grounds are gated and access is limited to hotel, event and bar guests, so no passer-by wanders into your ceremony.
