Types of wedding ceremonies in Germany

Symbolic, legally binding, religious… What’s the difference? For more detailed info about the different ways to get married in Germany, send us an enquiry. Whichever type of ceremony you end up choosing, our flexible packages for Germany have got you covered.

Legal

A legally binding ceremony is one that is registered in Germany, valid by German law and, in most cases, will equally be accepted as such in your home country. A legally binding wedding ceremony in Germany requires a lot of time and bureaucratic effort and can only take place in specific certified locations.

Religious

A religious ceremony in Germany can be either Protestant or Catholic and usually takes place in a church. An English-speaking priest can be requested and some parts of the ceremony can often be personalized by the couple, like saying your own vows. To be legally binding, a civil wedding ceremony is still necessary.

Symbolic

Couples can choose a symbolic ceremony in Germany when they prefer the ease of getting legally married in their home country and then simply have a meaningful blessing ceremony abroad. In a symbolic ceremony you actually also have full control over how your ceremony, your rituals and your vows look like.

…still not sure?

No worries, your local planner will be happy to explain all the differences and advise you on which type of ceremony is best for your circumstances.

Weather… when to get married in Germany

You know how they say: “Rainy wedding, happy marriage”? Well yes, that could be your case in Germany! Some rain there is to be expected, all year long. So if you’re planning to elope in Germany outdoors, we suggest choosing the months between May and August – while it might still rain, it will most likely last for just some minutes (ok, maybe half an hour!) and you would still be able to get married at your chosen location. Just in case of prolonged rain however, a smart choice could be to book your wedding night accommodation in a romantic hotel that also has some kind of function room or common area to work as plan B for your ceremony.

But actually Germany is very much known for its vibrant autumnal colors, when leaves are falling and the whole atmosphere in nature is enchanting: so if you’d like to have red and golden tones as your backdrop for your wedding day, autumn is your season to have a destination wedding in Germany.

Beware of the snow in winter months, especially in Southern Bavaria! For your romantic winter elopement in Germany, the best months would definitely be December, January and February.

Couples’ reviews

We only had a month to plan our elopement and we are truly grateful to work with Peach Perfect Weddings! Vanessza was really helpful and extremely organized from our initial meeting to the finale of our wedding day and was always in constant contact by e-mail or phone.

— Joana & Kensen

I absolutely recommend Peach Perfect Weddings for planning your wedding in Germany. We eloped to the Bavarian Alps and Vanessza was fantastic at helping during the process. Every step of the way, she was very patient and paid close attention to all the details, which I appreciated so much!
