Schlosshotel Kronberg: An empress's palace in the Taunus

Berlin court architect Ernst Ihne finished the castle in 1893, and he borrowed freely. You'll find German and Italian Renaissance, English Tudor Gothic and a little local half-timbering in one facade. Inside it's warmer than the outside suggests. Think oak panelling, leaded windows painted with coats of arms, and stone fireplaces you could almost stand up in. The red damask salons still hang with Renaissance tapestries and portraits from the Empress's own collection.

Empress Victoria Friedrich, Queen of Prussia and daughter of the British Queen Victoria, commissioned the castle in 1889 after losing her husband who reigned just 99 days. No longer wanted in Berlin, the former Empress chose the grounds of Kronberg for her new home.

She filled her castle's rooms with 30 years' worth of art that she had collected with her departed husband. Queen Victoria, her mother, visited in 1895, and Tsar Nicholas II planted trees in the park a year later. After wartime occupation and a 1967 fire, the Hesse family reopened it as a lovingly restord luxeury hotel.

Kronberg im Taunus sits between the forested Taunus hills and the Rhine-Main plain, giving you countryside quiet with city convenience. Frankfurt Airport is just 20 km away - roughly 18 minutes by car. Frankfurt's city center is a short train ride from Kronberg station. The castle perches above the old town, with views stretching across its own parkland and golf course. Kronberg's old town is a stroll downhill from the castle gates. You'll find cobblestone lanes, half-timbered houses, cafés, and a weekly farmers' market. The medieval Burg Kronberg and Gothic St. Johanniskirche anchor the town center. Beyond that, the Taunus Nature Park opens up with hiking and cycling trails through dense forest. A popular route climbs to the Altkönig summit at 798 meters, one of the region's best viewpoints. Frankfurt itself is close enough for a guest excursion to the Römerberg or the Main riverfront.

Frankfurt Airport is 31 km away by road, allow around 35 minutes by car. We are happy to arrange airport transfers for you and your guests. Fifty parking spaces sit on site, free of charge, with a bus drop-off if the whole party arrives together. A train station is nearby and the local train brings you to the city centre in about 50 minute.

As with most historic castles, absolute accessibility can not be guaranteed. However, the castle has been fitted with modern amenities such as lifts to all four floors, making the rooms and salons reachable without stairs.

The castle's 58 rooms and suites spread across ten categories, from cozy Heritage Rooms to the grand Royal Suite. British designer Nina Campbell furnished each one individually, pairing valuable antiques with comfortable modern touches. Most rooms overlook the park or golf course, and several suites sleep up to four. With every guest staying in the castle itself, the entire celebration stays intimate and connected. The Royal Suite or the Castle Balcony Suite make a glamorous setting to get ready. The window seats are deep, the light comes in soft through leaded glass, and the park fills every view. The Beauty Cottage sits at the park entrance in the old gatekeeper's house. It's built in the same Tudor style as the castle, and covers hair, facials and massages. Nobody has to drive anywhere before the ceremony.

The Empress's library is an official registry room of Standesamt Kronberg, so your legal ceremony takes place inside the castle. It seats 60 under brass candle chandeliers, with painted heraldic glass behind you and her bookcases down both walls. Outdoors, the Rotunde in the park handles open-air ceremonies with the castle as the backdrop. The registrar sits Wednesday to Friday, with only a handful of Saturday dates each year. Hectares of English-style parkland surround the castle, designed in the 1890s by Potsdam court gardener Hermann Walter. The terraced Italian rose garden - with its grotto and waterfall - is a standout photo backdrop and cocktail hour spot. Broad lawns slope down to the golf course, and mature trees frame the terraces overlooking it all. Whether you're planning drinks on the terrace or portraits among the roses, the grounds give you plenty of room.

Five historic salons offer seating from intimate to grand. The Blauer Salon (16 guests) and Kleiner Speisesaal (25 guests) suit elopements and micro-weddings. The Bibliothek and Roter Salon each hold up to 60 for a seated dinner. For larger celebrations, the Grüner Salon seats 120. Each room has its own character - from blue silk walls to deep red tapestries - and all open onto garden views. After dinner, the Fireplace Hall and Victoria Lounge serve cocktails until 1 AM on weekends.

Catering is in-house, so the menu comes from the castle's own kitchen and its chef. Restaurant Victoria takes the refined end, while Enrico d'Assia leans German-Mediterranean and spills onto the terrace in summer. For weddings, the kitchen team works with couples to build a menu that fits just right. Expect locally sourced ingredients with a seasonal focus, from welcome drinks through to late-night bites. The 18-hole course of Golf- und Land-Club Kronberg runs through the castle park itself, open from April to October. Guests can play the day before without leaving the grounds. English afternoon tea is served in the library at weekends, which makes an easy welcome for family arriving early. The Beauty Cottage covers spa treatments, and the Hoch-Taunus nature park offers hiking and cycling from the gate. All of it fits around our fixed-price Germany wedding packages.

Weddings run here all year, and one of ours was in the middle of January. Every ceremony space but the Rotunde is indoors, so rain changes the photographs rather than the plan. The castle has had central heating since 1893, which was remarkable then and is still welcome in February. The rooms and salons are air-conditioned for the summer. Striped awnings and parasols shade the terrace when the afternoon turns hot.
