About this venue

Highlights

Castle Ward is known for its dual architectural design - a combination of classic Roman architecture and Georgian Gothic style. The front of the castle is inspired by the Palladian architectural discipline while the other side is purely gothic with its pointed windows, hood moulds, and finials. These features made this 18th century castle an ideal location for Game of Thrones’ Winterfell scenes. None other than the Castle Ward’s farmyard served as GoT’s backdrop for most of its Winterfell scenes during Season 1.

Ceremony

This venue is also among the Northern Ireland wedding venues with both outdoor and indoor options for the ceremony and reception. The Mansion House is one of the top indoor options with its richly decorated walls and a grand ceiling with gorgeous chandeliers. This part of the castle is a hall of assembly that accommodates up to 65 guests - a perfect spot for a small wedding in Northern Ireland. The Theatre, on the other hand, is a bigger area that sits up to 120 persons for the reception and 150 for the ceremony. It’s a rustic space with its own private courtyard. If you want an outdoor wedding with the view of the Strangford Lough, you can hold an intimate ceremony in the The Loughshore, also called the Coal Quay. It’s perfect for a maritime-themed ceremony with a maximum of 80 guests. The Sunken Garden is another popular option for an outdoor wedding in Castle Ward. Imagine walking down the aisle that’s surrounded by the rich colours of the garden’s flowers and plants. You and your guests will enjoy the scent of these flowers and plants as the ceremony unfolds in this serene location. You can also get married under the 40-year-old lime trees within the estate that lends a view to the ruins of the Audley's Castle.

Reception

The owners of the castle can set up a marquee in the loughshore for the reception or you can have it in the Theatre. Marquees or tipis can be assembled either in the front lawn or beside the Strangford Lough. Both options will give your reception a gorgeous backdrop of either side of the mansion. A smaller indoor spot called the Stableyard Tea-room can also be the venue for an intimate evening reception.
