Hotel Villa Honegg, a 1905 wedding venue on a meadow high above Lake Lucerne, lit at sunset.
+32

Emil Durrer was a carpenter who drew up this hotel himself, with no architect, and opened it in 1906 with 72 beds. His family ran it for three generations. It's still 25 rooms on a shelf of meadow at 914 meters, and it still hosts one wedding at a time.

Location

You're on a shelf of meadow high above the lake, with working farms on either side and spruce forest behind. The peaks across the water hold snow into early summer. Lucerne is 25 kilometers by road, but only about 10 as the crow flies, because the lake is in the way. Stans is 11 kilometers, Ennetbürgen village just 5. It's quiet up here, which counts for a lot when you're deciding where to get married in Switzerland.

Your wedding at Hotel Villa Honegg

Villa Honegg sits at 914 meters on the Bürgenstock, a peninsula the lake wraps around on three sides. It's a 25-room hotel whose outdoor pool stays heated to 34°C right through winter. Weddings here stay small, from just the two of you up to 60 people at dinner. Our Swiss wedding packages cover the whole day, so all you have to do is show up.

Style

The building is pure 1905 outside: cream render, blue-green shutters and wrought-iron balconies. Its deep-eaved roof is easy to pick out from across the valley. Inside, it's been brought forward without being stripped back. An Art Nouveau ceiling sits above the fireside lounge, with a gilt-traced mirror over the mantel and herringbone parquet underfoot. A second, quieter lounge lined with black lattice shelving keeps its own fire going.

History

Emil Durrer trained as a carpenter and learned the trade from his uncle, a hotel builder on the Bürgenstock. In 1905 he bought three hectares of meadow here and drew up the hotel himself, with no architect. It opened in 1906 with 72 beds, and guests came for three or four weeks at a stretch. In the cold months the staff made ice on the forecourt, freezing water between rows of tree trunks. It kept the cellar stocked all summer. His widow Louise took over, then their son Karl, and the family ran it for three generations.

Transport

Zurich airport is 89 kilometers away, a little over an hour's drive, and it's the one to book. Basel is 128 kilometers. Coming by train, you'll be met at Ennetbürgen Dorf by the hotel shuttle, which we arrange for you. Parking outside is free, there's a garage if you'd rather, and chargers for electric cars. A helicopter pad sits on the meadow 150 meters from the door, and the small Buochs airfield is twelve minutes down the hill. Getting everyone here is part of what we handle for a Swiss destination wedding.

Accommodation

There are 25 rooms and suites, from a 24-square-meter Classic up to a 92-meter Master Suite facing the lake. Most have a balcony, and you choose between the water and the alpine panorama. A wedding here always includes staying the night. The hotel is straightforward about why: there isn't the capacity to do the day any other way. Breakfast runs until eleven, which is generous the morning after. Dogs are welcome in the house, though not in the restaurant, where a table in the Salon is offered instead.

Getting ready

The Salon on the third floor is yours for the whole day. It has a big marble table for hair and makeup, and a sofa corner in front of the fireplace for the waiting around. Because it's a floor away from the rooms, the two of you can get ready without running into each other before the first look. The kitchen sends up snacks. If you want a facial beforehand, or a massage once it's all over, the spa books either around your timings.

Ceremony

Ceremonies at Honegg are symbolic, so the legal wedding happens before you come up the hill. In Canton Nidwalden you can sign at the registry office in Stans. Or make more of it and marry legally on the Stanserhorn, 21 kilometers away. Our wedding planner in Switzerland books the slot, handles the paperwork and holds the timings at both ends. Up here, the Lounge is the spot most couples pick: level ground, the whole lake in front of you, chairs already there. The Park, with its gravel paths and clipped box, suits ten or so guests.

Outdoor spaces

The stone terrace is the heart of it, set with cream parasols, wine-barrel tables and clipped trees in planters. A sail roof pulls across for rain or hard sun, and retracts by itself when the wind picks up. Below the terrace the lawn drops away toward the meadow, where a flat rock ledge has become the spot couples keep going back to for photographs. On the right morning the fog fills the valley and settles on the lake, and you look down at the top of it.

Reception

Dinner is usually inside, in a restaurant of sage-green panelling under a tiered glass chandelier. It seats 60, or 70 if narrower chairs are brought in, and the windows open onto the terrace so the two run together. For the apéro the terrace takes 90 standing. Where you eat gets decided on the day with the forecast in front of everyone, and changing your mind at lunchtime is fine. If the weather turns properly wet, the third-floor Salon holds all 60 indoors.

Catering

The kitchen cooks everything itself and moves the menu on four times a year with the seasons. A herb and vegetable garden at 914 meters supplies it, along with three beehives whose honey turns up at breakfast and in the bar. Meat comes from a butcher down in Ennetbürgen, cheese from a dairy in Stans, and vegetables from a Nidwalden farm growing old varieties. You'll sit down to a menu built with you beforehand, and vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free all get proper thought.

Entertainment

With the hotel to yourselves the party runs to three in the morning, and longer if you'd like to add hours. For a smaller wedding that shares the house, music winds down at ten, and you can extend past midnight. Either way the evening is yours to shape. There's a bar called 1905 for afterwards, and the 20-seat cinema does duty for the midnight snack.

Activities

The pool is the reason a lot of people know this place. It's outdoors, edged so the water meets the view, and held at 34°C every day of the year, February included. Inside there's a bio sauna at 55°C, a Finnish one at 85°C, treatment rooms and a gym. Walk out of the door and the Felsenweg is there, the rock path Emil Durrer cut a connection to over a century ago, with the Hammetschwand lift at the far end.

Kids

Children of any age are welcome, and breakfast is priced by the year for them rather than at adult rates. The cinema doubles as a kids' room, which is useful twenty minutes into the speeches. A children's menu is there if you want it. Small children run about on the lane between the lawn and the Park, and nobody minds.

Sustainability

The 1905 building is heritage-protected, so the 2011 renovation had to work with what was already there. Its thick walls do most of the insulating, and everything else runs on renewable energy drawn from a lake-water heat pump. The garden, the orchard and the beehives feed the kitchen, and guests are welcome to wander through and pick a ripe apple. Suppliers are almost all from Nidwalden, some within walking distance. The hotel took an ibex fairstay performance award for 2026.
