Kreuzjochhaus: An alpine retreat for small weddings above Garmisch

This building started life as the Barbarahütte, a hikers' restaurant first recorded here in 1926. It was rebuilt and renamed Kreuzjochhaus in 1937, when a new neighboring hut took the Barbarahütte name instead. During the Second World War, Mountain Artillery Regiment 79 from Landsberg trained here. The hiking club Naturfreunde ran it for three decades from 1950, then a savings bank from Trier held it as a staff retreat. It's been an exclusive private-hire venue since 1999, run by the Holzhey family since 2010 - a working mountain hut, not one built to look like one.

The lodge sits in the Kreuzeck hiking and ski area, high above Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the wider Werdenfelser Land. Its terrace faces the Alpspitze and the Wetterstein massif, with Königshaus am Schachen - King Ludwig II's own mountain retreat - visible across the valley. It's one of the few venues in Germany you genuinely can't drive to, which is exactly the point for couples chasing scenery over convenience.

Couples staying on can walk straight out the door into the Kreuzeck trail network, or ride the cable car and cogwheel train to the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, for the day. Skiers get a head start too - the slopes begin practically at the lodge. It's an easy way to turn your wedding day in Germany into a few extra days in the mountains for everyone who made the trip.

There's no road to the door. Guests ride the Kreuzeckbahn gondola from the valley station, then walk about 15 minutes to the lodge - a luggage service handles the bags, but sturdy boots matter more than a nice suitcase. A roughly two-hour hike is the alternative for anyone who'd rather walk the whole way. The path isn't step-free, worth flagging to any guest with limited mobility before they book flights. Legally, German ceremonies happen off-site - most couples register at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen town hall or the Richard-Strauss-Institut, and some choose the monthly ceremony atop the Zugspitze itself. The vows that matter to your guests can still happen right here: most couples hold a free ceremony on the lodge's own terrace, with the Wetterstein peaks behind them. If the weather turns, the conference room's panoramic windows keep the view without the wind.

Dinner moves onto the terrace when the weather allows, or into Die Stube, the lodge's cozy dining room, when it doesn't - tables clear away afterward to make room for dancing. The kitchen builds a seasonal, regional menu around what you and your guests actually want, rather than serving a set banquet. With the whole house on one exclusive booking, there's no separate wedding party sharing the room next door.

All ten rooms, including the Alpspitz-Suite with its own private bathroom, are named for a peak visible from the terrace and sleep up to 38 guests between them. The other nine share modern bathrooms by floor, in keeping with a mountain hut rather than a hotel. Up to 50 people can join the celebration itself, so day guests can celebrate alongside the smaller group staying over. Check-in starts at 3pm on arrival day.

The Alpin Spa is small but real: an outdoor whirlpool, a panoramic sauna, an infrared cabin, and a fireplace lounge for afterward. Massages can be arranged on request. None of it is resort-scale, but for a group who rode a gondola up to their own wedding, it's exactly the right amount of pampering.

Every booking is a full buyout - the entire lodge, with no other wedding, no conference group, and no passing guests. Couples planning weddings in Germany rarely get a venue this remote and this entirely their own. Past the staff and your own guest list, nobody else sets foot in the building all weekend.
