Cloonacauneen Castle has stood on the road into Galway since 1490. Today the ivy-clad tower is a family-run castle hotel with its own pub, a glass-roofed restaurant and ten bedrooms, reopened in 2026 after seven years of conservation work. It's for couples who want a historic venue without giving up a city ten minutes away.

About this venue

Highlights

A real 15th-century tower house, ivy to the battlements, ten minutes up the Tuam Road from Galway's pubs. You can say your vows in the Tower Room beside a medieval open fire, with up to 20 guests on the chairs around you. Bigger days move into the dining room for 50 or the banqueting hall for 200. Downstairs, Bar 1490 fills with locals and live music on weekend nights. Our fixed-price wedding packages for Ireland are built for days exactly like this one.

Style

Medieval outside, cozy inside. The square tower wears creeper right up to its battlements, and a white gabled porch with a gothic window sits at its foot. Indoors it's dark wood, flagstones and stained glass in the bar. One dining room has deep red walls hung with gilt-framed sailing ships, and the hall has gold drapes with ivy-strung beams. A suit of armour guards a stone corner.

History

The tower went up around 1490, and its owners are known almost from the start. Richard Beag Burke, of the De Burgo tribe, held it in 1574. The Blakes followed, and after 1835 a Mr. Fair built a Tudor-style house against the tower. By 1914 the whole complex was a ruin. The Lenihan family re-roofed it in 1963 and raised the battlements back to their original height. Later owners added the bar, the restaurant and the function room. The Frazers took over in 2019, closed the castle for seven years of conservation and reopened it in 2026.

Location

Cloonacauneen sits on the N83 Tuam Road, just past Galway's northeastern edge. Eyre Square is 8 km away, about a quarter of an hour, and Claregalway village is 4 km up the road. So your guests get the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch and Salthill's promenade in the afternoon and a castle in open countryside by night. Fields and trees fill the view from the Conservatory windows. It makes an easy base for a destination wedding in the west of Ireland.

Excursions

Galway city is right nearby: Shop Street buskers, the cathedral, oysters at the Claddagh. Salthill's beaches are 12 km away and Silver Strand at Barna 15 km. Dunguaire Castle at Kinvara is half an hour south, and golfers have Galway Bay Golf Resort 15 km off. The Cliffs of Moher are about 80 km, and Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park sit 85 to 90 km out west.

Transport

For transatlantic flights, Shannon is the airport we'd point you to: 92 km down the M18. Dublin is 213 km across the M6, and Ireland West Airport Knock, 83 km north, is handy for UK flights. Galway's Ceannt station is 8 km away, with direct trains from Dublin Heuston. There's free parking at the castle. A taxi from the city takes ten minutes, which matters at the end of the night. Our Ireland wedding planner books the transfers and holds the timings with the castle.

Accommodation

Ten boutique bedrooms came with the 2026 reopening, split between the castle and the Castle Gate guest house beside it. Deluxe doubles run about 18 square meters, with en-suite bathrooms, premium linen, Wi-Fi, a TV and a tea and coffee tray. There's a four-poster room for the two of you and twin rooms for friends. Check-in opens at 3 pm. If you are planning a larger wedding and would rather have every guest under one roof, we work with wedding venues across Ireland that sleep far more.

Ceremony

Civil ceremonies have been held at the castle, and the Tower Room is the one we'd choose: a vaulted timber ceiling, stone walls and a big open fireplace, lit with logs on the day. It takes 20 guests, which suits most of our Irish couples, who marry with ten people or fewer. For a bigger ceremony, the covered outdoor area has hosted secular ceremonies under cover and heating. In Ireland you give the registrar three months' notice. Hattie, our planner, assists with that notification and with booking the registrar for the castle.

Reception

Up to 20 can eat in the Tower Room itself, by the fire you married beside. The dining room seats 50. The banqueting hall seats 200 at round tables under ivy-strung beams, with candelabras, gold drapes and mirrors along the walls.

Catering

The kitchen is the castle's own, the same one behind the Conservatory restaurant and the Sunday lunch Galway families drive out for. Expect comforting, seasonal food with a few creative twists, built on local produce. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus are available, and there's a kids' menu. For a rehearsal dinner, the Conservatory does private dining by arrangement, with hand-picked flowers on the tables and the gardens outside the glass.

Entertainment

Bar 1490 is the heart of the evening: a long polished bar carved with the castle's name, Guinness on tap, a harp on the back shelf and a whiskey cabinet. Local musicians play here every Saturday and Sunday night, so a weekend wedding ends in a session the locals join. The banqueting hall has room for a band and a dance floor.

Kids

Children are welcome. The restaurant has a kids' menu, and family rooms are being added to the accommodation. The grounds give small guests somewhere to run while the photos happen. Indoors, the stone dog at the castle door, the suit of armour and the spiral stair up the tower keep them busy.

Photoshoot

The creeper ivy turns the whole front of the tower green in summer, with the gothic porch and black carriage lamps below it. Indoors, the Tower Room fireplace is the portrait every couple takes, red leather wingbacks on either side. Night falls properly dark out here, with no streetlights, so the lit castle stands out against a black sky.

How our fees work

Our planning fees are always covered in your wedding package. They are set based on the typical effort and level of responsibility each service takes to organise, and not as a percentage of your budget, i.e. a bigger budget does not mean a bigger fee for us.
