Underground springs keep it crystal clear, and thick forest frames every shore. Eight small islands dot the surface, creating a layered mountain-and-water backdrop that feels almost otherworldly. It's one of the most beautiful natural elopement spots in Germany for couples drawn to raw nature over traditional venues - and all just 90 minutes south of Munich. ### History Two families have shaped this lake. In 1803 a fishing family bought it from the state, and their hut on the eastern shore was the only dwelling here. In 1884 August Terne bought the lake at auction and opened it up to summer visitors. His descendants still own it today. The name comes from the yew trees, Eiben in German, that once ringed the water. Only a scattering of them survives in the protected woods nearby. ### Location Eibsee sits in Grainau, a quiet village in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district of Upper Bavaria. The Zugspitze rises directly behind the southern shore to 2,962 meters. Despite feeling remote, the lake is surprisingly easy to reach - roughly 90 minutes from Munich by car and about two hours by train. The Höllentalklamm gorge is a walk away through the woods, its path cut into the rock beside the water. Neuschwanstein Castle is 64 kilometers west, about an hour by car. Mittenwald, known for its violin makers and painted facades, is 28 kilometers east. Innsbruck sits 66 kilometers south over the Austrian border, close enough for a day out either side of the wedding. ### Activities In summer, the lake itself is the main attraction. The water is clean enough for swimming and diving, and you can rent stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and rowboats at the shore. The circular hiking trail is rewarding without being strenuous, and the hotel's wellness area offers a quieter way to unwind. In winter, the lake sometimes freezes (though not very often), and the surrounding area opens up for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. ### Transport Munich Airport is 150 kilometers away, close to two hours by road, and it's the one we'd point most couples to. Innsbruck is nearer at 65 kilometers. Trains run from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the Zugspitzbahn cog railway then climbs to a stop 300 meters from the shore. Bus 323 runs in high season, 314 out of it. However, the shoreline has boulders, tree roots and coarse gravel, with short scrambles down to the water in places. Tell us early if anyone in your group needs even ground, and we'll choose a spot that works. ### Accommodation The Eibsee Hotel stands at the eastern end of the lake. It's a four-star superior house with around 40 rooms, most with balconies facing the water or the mountains, plus a spa and an indoor pool. Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen add guesthouses and small hotels a short drive away. We'll suggest places that suit your group and book whichever you'd like. ### Ceremony The Eibsee lake is open to everyone who respects and protects the natural beauty of this place. Small ceremonies with just the two of you or a handful of guests can take place anywhere around the lake. One of our favourite places is a little spot that is tucked away just beside the Eibsee and offers views of both the Eibsee Lake and the mountain ranges behind it. Given the nature of this location, please keep in mind that it is best suited for couples that love the outdoors and who want a simple, heartfelt ceremony in a special place. It is not well suited for large groups and couples who want more elaborate setups that include a lot of seating and large décor. We want to help protect the beauty of this place. Which is why we ask our couples who choose it as their place to say 'I do' to make sure not to bring anything that leaves a trace, such as confetti or glitter. If you are ever unsure about something, we are happy to advice. ### Photoshoot Few places in the Alps offer this range of backdrops within walking distance. The Wankle viewpoint looks across the islands toward the Zugspitze and Riffelwandspitzen peaks. Sunrise sessions catch the mountains in soft golden light before the first hikers appear. The cable car to the Zugspitze summit adds an above-the-clouds dimension if you want that kind of drama. Local Bavarian flavours and regional ingredients are the forefront of dinners here. The lakeside restaurant has a glass front that slides open onto a terrace above the water. As soon as the days start getting warmer, the lake attracts visitors and locals alike to swim in its clear waters, enjoy the beergarden on its shores, and walk the pleasantly easy hike around the lake. While we know some more quiet spots around the lake that we love, do keep in mind that there is still a chance of some curious onlookers walking by. Summers can get hot, so we recommend setting your ceremony in the early morning hours or late afternoon.
