History

Dating back to the 13th century, this beautiful castle has been passed on to different families and individuals over the years. It was built in the early 13th century, but its ownership was recorded only in the 14th century under one of the most prominent and important dynasties in European history, the House of Habsburgs. Later, the Scharnachthal dynasty occupied the castle, and more Bernese dynasties followed. It was only in 1801 that the castle became privately owned for more than 100 years. An American lawyer named William Maul Measey then bought the castle and established a foundation named after it in the 1940s. Soon, the historic structure was opened to the public as a museum showcasing Berne's history. It was in the 21st century when the castle was totally transformed to be an ideal fairytale venue for special events when a new building was erected housing the modern restaurant with a terrace opening up to the lake.
