Scotland’s great outdoors and cultural vibe

Scotland’s endless countryside and scenic cliffs are not just breathtaking nature scenes, but they hold great history of late Scottish heroes. From valleys that witnessed the Jacobite uprising to Edwardian castles that peacefully sit in the Scottish Highlands, there is much to explore in this beautiful country. Every part speaks of the nation's rich past and invites you to be one with nature as you and your loved one recite your vows. Get lost in the waterfalls, woodlands, and mountains as you enjoy the Scottish landscape. Scotland’s great outdoors is a perfect backdrop for your adventure elopement.

Over 1,500 castles still exist in Scotland today and plenty of these can and do serve as dreamy wedding venues. So if you're looking for the perfect mix of history and culture, combined with the convenience and energy of the city, then an urban destination wedding in Scotland migth just be what you're looking for!

‘Game of Thrones’ filming locations

Fans of the highly-successful show 'Game of Thrones' will no doubt be familiar with the six Scottish locations that served as a backdrop for the series. Whilst you may not be able to actually hold your wedding ceremony or reception at most of these spots, Scotland still has an abundance of historic wedding venues which could have just as easily made it into the show - like the Eilean Donan Castle which can easily be mistaken for Winterfell!

When to have a destination wedding in Scotland

Spring

Getting married in Scotland during spring is ideal if you don’t want to mix in with the crowds, and still want to have a little sunshine on your big day and honeymoon. Spring weather in Scotland is generally dry, so you will not worry too much about rain on your big day. However, take note that the temperature drops to an actual cold at night, so you need to bring thick clothes with you for your honeymoon. March is generally cloudy, but the sun starts to shine in April. May is the best month in spring to tie the knot in Scotland when gardens are starting to bloom and national parks are open for your honeymoon trip.

Summer

There is a reason why the British Monarchs are celebrating their birthdays in summer. June is the best month for outdoor celebrations in the woodlands, castle parks, and manor house gardens. If the two of you want to explore some sports activities, summer is the perfect time. It’s the time of the year when rains don’t bother that much and sunsets are at their best. July is the warmest month in Scotland, ideal for beach weddings.

Autumn

If your goal is a dreamy ceremony under the enchanting autumn trees, either September to early October is the best month to do it. You’ll love the autumn colors of the falling leaves as you walk along the streets of Scottish towns. Just imagine the picturesque scene in your wedding photos! However, take note that an indoor wedding is nearly a must when your Scottish destination wedding is set for autumn. Beautiful castles and manor houses in the rural regionsof Scotland, as well as urban wedding venues have luxury event rooms to still make your autumn wedding exceedingly beautiful.

Winter

Some couples choose a winter wedding in Scotland despite the very cold and unpredictable weather because it’s the time of the year when venues and suppliers offer the lowest prices (with the exception of holiday dates, of course!). Enjoy a winter wonderland wedding from December to February inside a dreamy Scottish castle or go wild under the rain or snow in the middle of a woodland or on top of a cliff! Your pick!

Wedding ceremonies in Scotland

If you chose to get married in a location that geographically belongs to the United Kingdom, which includes Scotland, be sure you follow the legal requirements listed below.

Civil

Tie the knot and make it legal in the UK by following certain requirements at least a month before the ceremony. All you have to do is to meet the Registrar in person to present your original documents and to make a declaration of your intent to marry. After the processing of your documents, they can be collected at least a day before your wedding as long as the Registrar's office is open and available for an appointment. A civil marriage in the UK is legally-binding so long as it is conducted by the registrar or by the deputy registrar of the district where the wedding will take place. The venue could be in the Registrar’s Office or at any venue which was approved prior to your wedding day. To marry in a venue of your choice, you need to apply for a temporary approval for a civil ceremony in that location. There’s no strict requirement on the date of the civil ceremony and it can take place any day of the week.

Religious

In the worst case that your desired venue for the ceremony isn’t licensed to hold weddings or the temporary approval for a ceremony in that location was denied, you can choose a religious ceremony in place of the civil wedding. The only requirement is for it to be performed by a Minister of any recognized religious organisation. The good news is that religious weddings are recognized as legal in the UK, and it can be held anywhere, whether in an outdoor or indoor venue. But you have to get the permission of the Minister to hold the ceremony in your chosen location.

Symbolic

Some couples don’t mind the legalities when flying to the UK for a destination wedding. If you’re one of them, a hassle-free symbolic wedding is the perfect type of ceremony for you. A symbolic wedding means zero paperwork and what you can do is to handle all the legal requirements in your home country to make your marriage legally-binding.

Legal-binding

Regular documentation requirements such as proof of identity, nationality, residency, and capacity to marry apply to Northern Ireland and Scotland weddings, but there is a residency requirement in the UK. A legal requirement that is common to the rest of UK is that the couple must be at least 16 years of age. Despite the absence of residency requirements in Scotland and Northern Ireland, they need to submit completed marriage notice forms and all the required documents to the Registrar of Marriages in the district where the ceremony will take place at least a month before getting married. After getting the approval from the Registrar, the marriage should take place within a year. Same-sex marriages have been legally recognized in the UK. In England and Wales, civil marriages may not take place in religious venues, but since 1994, they may take place in other licensed venues. Religious marriages must take place in the church, except with a Special License.
